New Zealand Police Alert 2:00pm 3 Oct 2008 Canterbury
Location of incident: CHRISTCHURCH
Incident type: FALSE TSUNAMI
FALSE TSUNAMI CALL
Enquiries are now complete. It appears a gentleman was looking out to sea and saw what he thought was a tsunami coming in. The sight was confirmed by other fishermen in the area ans there certainly was a visual effect out to sea.
With the weather as it is at the moment combined with sea fog and refraction of light at long distances this impression was gained by many people.
I wish to advise that advanced warnings of tsunamis are received at communication centres in plenty of time for advising the public.
We hope that no one was hurt or unduly shaken during the evacuation of the areas.
Finally if people want more information about tsunamis there are some good sights on the web.
