Night Shelter Manager’s Decade of Service Ends
Wellington’s Night Shelter farewells long time manager Barry MacDonald this week who is travelling back to England to
settle.
Barry has worked at the Night Shelter on Taranaki St for the last 10 years and lists the recent major upgrade as the
best thing to happen over that time.
“I’ve enjoyed my time here definitely. The board is very supportive and a strong believer in the important function the
shelter serves. It’s also a very satisfying place to work knowing that you provide a bed for people who genuinely need
one.”
“The relationship we have with Downtown Community Ministry has been instrumental in finding more suitable and permanent
housing for people coming through the shelter,” he says.
DCM staff, in partnership with the Night Shelter, are in regular contact with residents to assess their housing needs
and support them to find stable tenancies.
Barry is looking forward to reconnecting with family, including his 80 year old mother, in England.
Salvation Army Hope Centre Social Services Team Leader Mike Leon will replace Barry and begins work at the Night Shelter
on 20 October. Mike has had considerable experience at the shelter, as an overnight supervisor for a number of years.
