MOU Marks Stronger Partnership Between Local Maori And Southern Police

The partnership between southern Maori and police is being strengthened and formalised this Friday (19 September) with
the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU).
"This is a significant occasion for both parties. The memorandum formalises our desire to strengthen our relationship,
as we work towards a common goal of safer communities together," said Southern Police District Commander, Superintendent
George Fraser.
The MOU is being signed tomorrow (Friday 19 September 2008) at Puketeraki Marae, Karitane at 1pm.
There are a number of strands to the memorandum, Superintendent Fraser said.
"It will be used as a base for consultation around strategic priorities and plans, and in the development of crime
prevention and education initiatives."
"It will also foster increased responsiveness of Police to the needs of Maori so that we can work more effectively with
our community," Superintendent Fraser said.
The memorandum also supports the already-established Maori Advisory Group, which provides Maori input into police
policies and procedures.
