New Zealand Police Southern News Release 2:32pm 21 July 2008
The third tranche of staffing allocations, part of the 2008/09 budget, brings 17 new staff to Southern District.
Of those staff, 12 will be used to bolster the District's community approaches to crime and youth offending. These will be in the form of smaller community teams focusing on high risk individuals and neighbourhoods including the rural sector, youth policing, and curbing alcohol misuse.
The balance of staff has been allocated taking into account factors such as population growth, crime rates and types, geography, and key District priorities identified in the strategic planning process. Key priorities include community policing, youth offending and victimisation, organised crime, and alcohol misuse.
"This final allocation recognises the need for us to strengthen our resources in community policing to achieve our goals of reducing crime and youth offending, and working in partnership with our community to make it a safer place to live. It brings our total new staff allocation from the 2008/09 budget to 17 staff," said Southern District Commander, George Fraser. The district now has, in total, 653 police staff.
