Waikato Museum offers unique ANZAC experience

Hamiltonians are invited to extend their ANZAC Day experience this year at Waikato Museum through a programme of
remembrance, including a preview performance of the play Strange Resting Places.
The impetus behind the programme of remembrance is to honour the sacrifice of the ANZAC soldiers and contribute to
sharing the ANZAC legacy with all generations through a blend of educational and reflective exhibitions.
The highlight of the programme of remembrance on ANZAC Day itself is a preview of Strange Resting Places, which will be
performed at 4pm on Friday, 25 April following the ANZAC Day commemoration services at Memorial Park. The cost to watch
this performance is $20 per adult.
Strange Resting Places is set against the backdrop of World War II and draws upon a mixture of historic fact and fiction
to tell stories inspired by the Maori Battalion in Italy. Two of New Zealand’s well-known actors Paolo Rontondo and Rob
Mokaraka star in this performance.
Waikato Museum Concept Leader Crystal Mann says the programme of remembrance adds another dimension to Waikato Museum’s
key role in offering both a place of reflection and a haven for learning for all visitors.
“ANZAC Day remembers those who fought for our freedom and the country that we have today. It’s an enduring part of our
local and national legacy.
“The museum plays a pivotal role in offering the community a place to remember the sacrifice and bravery of all those
involved in our war efforts, and also to ensure that knowledge and understanding of this legacy continues through future
generations. There’s a fantastic opportunity for the public to extend their experience of this important day following
the official dawn and civic services, by visiting Waikato Museum.
“Through the programme of remembrance visitors have the opportunity to reflect, experience and observe aspects of the
ANZAC experience through a variety of mediums, including live acting performances”.
Other highlights of the programme of remembrance include a free performance by the Gallagher Group Hamilton Civic Choir
at 2pm on 25 April, an artistic representation of war in the museum Vitrine space plus the poignant exhibition entitled
Forgotten Tragedy: The Anzacs at Passchendaele.
