ERUPT
Lake Taupo Festival
8 – 18 May 2008
The Big Bang, an explosive night of fire and light in May will launch ERUPT Lake Taupo Festival 2008.
Set against the vista of the central North Island volcanic plateau, The Big Bang is a large-scale free outdoor
extravaganza, matching fire and light to the beat of live music and percussion, designed to ignite ten days of Erupt
festivities.
Erupt is the reincarnation of the biennial Lake Taupo Arts Festival, and as well as capturing more of the local elements
in the Festival identity, the event has switched from February to the autumn hue of May.
The full programme for the revamped boutique festival, featuring the hottest local and international comedy, cabaret,
circus, visual arts, music, film, theatre and dance, plus Writers Erupt, writers will be launched early March in the
build up to The Big Bang.
Festival Director Drew James says “We were looking for a new brand for the Festival and the active volcanic nature of
this awesome landscape became the natural starting point, stunningly interpreted by identity and design specialists Cato
Partners”.
“The Big Bang will go off! Thanks to major funding from YouthTown, we are able to create an event like no other” Drew
James says. “The emphasis is on fire and light performance and people should watch out for some unbelievable human
lightening bolts and high aerial antics.
The Festival shift in date away from the peak season will enable festival-goers to take advantage of what Taupo has to
offer in autumn with the bonus of off-peak prices. Ticket prices will be significantly cheaper than in the main cities,
and out-of-towners will have the pick of accommodation at shoulder-season rates, from luxury hotels to backpackers or
private holiday homes.
