Shedding light on Gulf Harbour’s light problem
“Rodney ratepayers won’t foot the power bill for the street lights that recently remained on around Gulf Harbour, Red
Beach and other areas for prolonged periods,” says Mike Isle, spokesperson of the Rodney District Council.
“In light of the many calls we have received from concerned residents about street lights that intermittently remain
switched on for weeks, we decided to shed some light on the problem.љ The good news is that Rodney ratepayers won’t be
expected to pay for any additional power use, as Vector is responsible for the power supply and maintenance.
“But even though Rodney ratepayers won’t be paying for the excess, we were concerned about the wastage caused as a
result, and have lodged numerous reports to Vector via the Council’s street lighting contractor, CSL.љ CSL does
maintenance on the columns (repairing things like lamps and fuses), but they don’t touch the cables.љ All cable faults
are referred to Vector,” Mike says.
He also explains that Vector have previously indicated that they prefer to leave street lights switched on if they can’t
attend to a cable fault for a while, as this enhances safety at night.
“But thank you to everyone who have called in to report the problem, as many hands make light work.љ We trust our Rodney
residents will rest assured knowing that there is no daylight robbery at work after all!” Mike concludes.
