Assault on Elderly Lady

Incident Type: Assault on Elderly Lady
At approximately 6:40 p.m. on Monday the 26th day of November 2007 the New Zealand Fire Service received multiple calls about a house fire at an address in Bleakhouse Road, HOWICK.
On arrival, the house was found to be engulfed with smoke. Entry was gained and the interior searched.
An elderly female occupant of the house was located in the garage.
This female was unresponsive, bound by the hands and legs and lying in a pool of her own blood. She had extensive head injuries.
This female has been transported to Middlemore hospital where she is currently in a serious but stable condition.
The house had extensive smoke damage.
At approximately 8:30 p.m. that same evening, a 43 year old male caucasian was located inside a dwelling house nearby in MacLeans Road.
When approached by one of the occupants, the male was initially cooperative but a short time later smashed his way out of the house through a toilet window.In doing so, the male received deep lacerations to his arms.
The male was apprehended by the house occupier a short distance away and detained until police arrived.
This male has been transported to Middlemore Hospital for treatment to his lacerations and is currently assisting police with their inquiries into both incidents. No other person is being sought for either incident.
Anyone who noticed any unusual and suspicious activity in the Bleakhouse Road area on Monday the 26th day of November 2007 from 2:00 p.m. onwards are asked to please contact the Otara Criminal Investigation Unit on 272 0900.
