Nathan Haines Quartet With Tama Waipara At Ata Rangi Vineyard
Nathan Haines 'The Squire for Hire' is playing at Ata Rangi during the Toast Martinborough Festival. Fresh from a 3
month stint in Europe where he performed in Russia, Amsterdam, Italy, London and Ireland, Nathan will join father Kevin
Haines on bass, Ron Samsom drums, Kevin Field keyboards, and extraordinarily talented guest guitarist/vocalist Tama
Waipara for this special appearance at Toast Martinborough.
"Tama is one of the most powerful and moving singers I've heard anywhere and when he really goes for it, you'd better
watch out" Nathan laughs. "He's just spent 8 years performing at festivals, concerts and clubs in New York - in a few
years he'll be a household name in New Zealand - mark my words!"
Nathan, Tama and the band will be performing several new compositions, as well as great material from recent albums.
"With jazz and improvisation it's a great luxury to be able to be free within the framework of the song, and really take
it to the next level at a live, out-door performance like this."
New Zealand's most well known jazzer joined the NZSO and American soul legend Marlena Shaw for a capacity audience last
December at the Aotea Centre where they did a live rendition of their tune "Squire for Hire" with the backing of the 85
piece orchestra. Nathan's most recent album "Life Time" featuring the NZSO was widely heralded with rave reviews. Helen
Mayhew on UK's BBC Radio 2 described it as "a stunning and accomplished album showcasing Nathan's vocal talents".
"It's my first performance in the area and I'm really looking forward to it. We'll be alternating sets with a whitebait
fritter or two, a couple of glasses of primo Pinot and a couple of gorgeous, hugely talented jazz musicians, Elizabeth
Braggins and Caitlin Smith. How hard can that be!? "
"Seriously though, I've always been a huge fan of Ata Rangi wines and their style of winemaking, so it's a match made in
heaven for me".
Ata Rangi founder and winemaker Clive Paton has long been an ardent Nathan Haines fan, with the full collection of his
CD's and collaborations in the winery collection. Back in the 70's, Clive would soothe his heifers with the old cow-shed
radio. Now, he says "I smooth the pinot noir resting in barrel with very cool jazz!"
