CMJ traffic bulletin: Tuesday 24 October until Thursday 26 October
Transit New Zealand would like to advise motorists of proposed closures for work on the Central Motorway Junction upgrade over the next week.
CMJ Stage 1
Ramp and link closures:
Tuesday 24 October – CLOSED – overnight from 8pm until 5.30am the following morning:
* Port off-ramp (SH1) northbound
Detour: off at Wellesley St off-ramp and Grafton Rd.
CMJ Stage 2
Full motorway closures:
Tuesday 24 until Thursday 26 October – CLOSED – overnight from 10.30pm until 5am the following morning:
* Southern Motorway (SH1) between Nelson St off-ramp and Wellington St on-ramp northbound
Tuesday 24 until Thursday 26 October – CLOSED – overnight from 9.30pm until 5am the following morning:
* Southern Motorway (SH1) between Cook St off-ramp and Hobson St on-ramp southbound
Ramp and link closures:
Tuesday 24 until Thursday 26 October ­– CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5am the following morning:
* Western Springs on-ramp to Northwestern Motorway (SH16) eastbound
* Northwestern Motorway (SH16) to Nelson St off-ramp citybound
* Northwestern Motorway (SH16) to Newton Rd off-ramp citybound
Tuesday 24 until Thursday 26 October – CLOSED – overnight from 10pm until 5am the following morning:
* Khyber Pass Rd on-ramp to Southern Motorway (SH1) southbound
Tuesday 24 and Thursday 26 October – CLOSED – overnight from 10.30pm until 5am the following morning:
* Southern Motorway to Northwestern Motorway (SH1 to SH16 link) westbound
Wednesday 25 October – CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5am the following morning:
* Port to Northwestern Motorway (SH16) link westbound including Wellesley St on-ramp
Wednesday 25 October – CLOSED – overnight from 11pm until 5am the following morning:
* Hobson St on-ramp to Northwestern Motorway (SH16) westbound
During these times motorists are requested to follow the signposted detours while the closures are in operation.
Transit New Zealand regrets any inconvenience caused.
In the event of inclement weather, the closures will be postponed to the next fine evening.
The CMJ Project
Stage 1 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project, completed in January 2005, covers the section of motorway between the Upper Queen St over-bridge and Gillies Ave on- and off-ramps.

Stage 2 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project extends from Bond St on the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) to the interface with CMJ Stage 1 near Symonds St and from Cook St on the Southern Motorway (SH1) to Symonds St. The SH16 Newton Rd to Western Springs Auxiliary Lane westbound widening project is included in CMJ Stage 2 works.
The Public Information Centre at 13-19 Howe St, Freemans Bay is no longer open on a regular basis. Any member of the public who has concerns about or wishes to discuss aspects of the project may make an appointment by phoning 0800 CMJ CORE (0800 265 2673).
