Young family gets welcome support
Nappies and milk formula for a seven month old baby of two Downtown Community Ministry clients is now being paid for by
donations from a local church.
Members of Central Baptist Church on Boulcott St decided to contribute towards the high cost of these items to ease the
financial burden on the family.
The couple was previously giving their baby standard milk and after recently finding work, the mother is finding it
difficult to breastfeed her baby.
DCM's Project Margin coordinator Di Landy says the church members' generosity acknowledges the positive changes the
couple has made to their lifestyle.
"They have demonstrated an ability to make positive changes in their life and we're really happy that there are people
wanting to support that," says Di.
"I've been quite humbled by the response of the church and want to thank Jenny MacIntosh (Co Minister at Central
Baptist) and her community for being so receptive."
The couple gratefully comes into DCM with receipts for formula and nappies and is reimbursed for their costs.
All money received from the church is being earmarked for milk and formula use or for extraordinary events such as the
baby needing medical care.
In six to eight months time, Di expects the money might be used for another DCM client who is seven months pregnant.
These three clients have all come from backgrounds of rough sleeping on Wellington's streets.
