Women's Centre Congratulates Barbara White

Published: Tue 27 Jun 2006 12:45 AM
Richmond woman Barbara White, who successfully campaigned to amend the Superannuation Act, will be honoured at a morning tea at the Women's Centre on Thursday 29 of June at 11 am.
Mrs White will tell the story of her two and half year campaign, based on her personal experience of having a husband in care; and wanting to ensure that superannuation payments for everyone in this situation were fair and just.
The amended NZ Superannuation and Retirement Income Act is due to apply from July 1st , when people who have a partner in care will be eligible for a single superannuation rate and a living alone allowance.
The morning tea has been organized by members of the Women in Nelson (WIN) collective based in the Women's Centre.
"Barbara was delighted to accept the invitation extended through the Women's Centre, and pleased that her lobby for change to the superannuation Act is being recognized locally," WIN member Mary-Lynn Boyes said.
Barbara's efforts in the long period she lobbied for changes to the Act will be acknowledged in a message from the Ministry of Women's Affairs to be read out at the celebration.
Carrie Mozena, coordinator of the Women's Centre, said it was appropriate to recognize Barbara at the centre: "Statistics show it is more often women who find themselves in the situation she was in. Barbara is an excellent example that age is not a barrier to women being politically active and pursuing a goal to fruition."
