Great Kiwi sounds return to the Zoo this summer
Saturday 21 January - Sunday 5 March 2006
The lush and intimate surrounds of Auckland Zoo will again play host to some of New Zealand's hottest bands this summer,
with the seven concerts in the Coca-Cola ZooMusic series.
Boh Runga is the first to take the stage on 21 January. She is followed over the next few weeks by Katchafire, Nesian
Mystik, Pluto, The Black Seeds, Don McGlashan and the Seven Sisters and Che Fu.
Boh is fresh from working on the much-anticipated third album from stellar*, and she hits the stage with her
singer-songwriter skills on Saturday 21 January.
After stirring a huge sing-along ZooMusic crowd in 2005, the much-loved reggae sounds of Katchafire will set the series
alight once more on Sunday 29 January. The concert kicks off with an energetic performance from soul-jazz collective,
one million dollars. They are among a host of outstanding support artists will also perform during the 6pm - 9pm
twilight series, which is now in its third year.
On Saturday 4 February, the boys from Nesian Mystik also make a welcome return to ZooMusic, performing their special
blend of pop, hip-hop and R beats. Special guests, Minuit, will provide an unexpected twist to the night.
The set from five-piece rock and roll act Pluto, on Saturday 11 February, will deliver the trademark harmonies and
melodic power that feature on their critically acclaimed album, Pipeline Under the Ocean.
On Friday 17 February, groove along to The Black Seeds' unique blend of funk, reggae, soul and dub that has made them so
popular throughout the country.
The iconic Don McGlashan and his new band the Seven Sisters, including the talented SJD, perform old favourites as well
as fresh material from McGlashan's forthcoming solo album. He plays Saturday 25 February with Wellington's Little
Bushmen open the concert, following their successful stint supporting Dave Dobbyn on his recent tour.
Wrapping up the series on Sunday 5 March, Che Fu will showcase the innovative and masterful approach to hip-hop that
defines him as one of New Zealand's most successful male vocalists. Top female vocalist and MC, Ladi6, will help get the
show started.
"Events like this highly successful music series enable us to attract new audiences, who may not have been to the Zoo
for some time, or wouldn't choose to come otherwise," says Auckland Zoo Director, Glen Holland.
"It's an opportunity for these visitors to find out what the Zoo is all about as a place of both recreation and
conservation. Not only is it a fantastic and unique recreational experience for them, but more importantly, the proceeds
from ticket sales help us carry out essential conservation work with native and overseas species."
Most of the animals will still be up enjoying the warmth of the summer evenings during the series. So make a day of it,
come early and hang out with your family and friends. Purchase dinner and refreshments from the licensed Darwin's café,
or the bar and BBQs we'll have set up near the Band Rotunda. A range of delicious food hampers can also be pre-ordered
from Darwin's café (phone 09-360 5261), and Weta Café will be open late.
Coca-Cola ZooMusic tickets can be pre-purchased from 19 December at the Zoo (ph 360 3805) or through Ticketek. With
limited capacity, and tickets expected to sell fast, we recommend advance booking. Tickets: Adults $20, Children (4+yrs)
$10 and $50 for a three-concert multi-ticket or family pass (2 adults, 2 children).
