MEDIA RELEASE Monday 5 December 2005
Two Councils and Trust hold public celebration of new wetland
The development of Christchurch’s newest wetland at Charlesworth Reserve will be celebrated this Saturday 10 December with a public opening event organised by Christchurch City Council, Environment Canterbury (ECan) and the Avon-Heathcote Ihutai Trust.
Guided walks will be taken through the wetland, following the official opening at 1pm and everyone is welcome to join a celebratory barbecue, which will end at about 2.30pm.
Christchurch City Council chief executive Lesley McTurk; ECan chief executive Bryan Jenkins; and Avon-Heathcote Ihutai Trust chair Alex Drysdale will each speak about the development of the wetland, which has been a joint effort by the three organisations and local residents.
The organisations’ efforts to design, construct and gain approval for culverts to bring water from the estuary to the wetland have been central to the project’s success.
All those attending the opening of the reserve are asked to follow signage on Linwood Ave to access parking at the back of Charlesworth Reserve, as there is only limited parking on Linwood Ave. The event will be held wet or fine.
