CMJ traffic bulletin: Saturday 19 November until Thursday 24 November
Transit New Zealand would like to advise motorists of proposed closures for work on the Central Motorway Junction upgrade over the next week.
CMJ Stage 2
Full motorway closures:
Sunday 20 until Thursday 24 November – CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5.30am the following morning:
- Southern Motorway (SH1) southbound between Cook St off-ramp and Hobson St on-ramp
- Southern Motorway (SH1) northbound between Symonds/Port/Wellesley St off-ramp and Wellington St on-ramp
- Southern Motorway (SH1) southbound between Fanshawe St off-ramp and Hobson Street on-ramp
Ramp and link closures:
Sunday 20 until Thursday 24 November – CLOSED – overnight from 9pm until 5.30am the following morning:
- Southern Motorway (SH1) to Nelson St off-ramp citybound
- Southern Motorway to Northwestern Motorway (SH1 to SH16 westbound) link
- Port to Northwestern Motorway and Wellesley St on-ramp (SH16 westbound) link
- Northwestern Motorway to the Southern Motorway (SH16 to SH1 southbound) link
- Northwestern Motorway (SH16) to Nelson St off-ramp citybound
- Northwestern Motorway to Port (SH16) port-bound link
- Newton on-ramp to Northwestern Motorway (SH16) westbound
- Northwestern Motorway (SH16) westbound to St Lukes off-ramp
- Hobson on-ramp to Southern Motorway (SH1) southbound
Note: That on the nights that the Port to Northwestern Motorway (SH16) westbound link is closed the Newton Rd on-ramp to the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) will remain open and vice versa.
During these times motorists are requested to follow the signposted detours while the closures are in operation.
Transit New Zealand regrets any inconvenience caused.
In the event of inclement weather, the closures will be postponed to the next fine evening.
The CMJ Project
Stage 1 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project, completed in January 2005, covers the section of motorway between the Upper Queen St over-bridge and Gillies Ave on- and off-ramps.

Stage 2 of Transit’s Central Motorway Junction upgrade project extends from Bond St on the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) to the interface with CMJ Stage 1 near Symonds St and from Cook St on the Southern Motorway (SH1) to Symonds St.
