Race Relations expert comes to Nelson.
Nelson has the opportunity to learn from American expertise in on-campus race relations, with the visit of Dr Jeanne
Gazel ,the director of an undergraduate race relations programme in Michigan.
Dr Dr Gazel is the director and co founder of the Multi-Racial Unity Living Experience program, at Michigan State
University. Claire Nichols from the Nelson Multi Ethnic Council said Dr Gazel was invited to Nelson by the Nelson Bahai
community, working with the Nelson Multi-Ethnic Council to arrange the seminars.
“The public seminars will be a great follow up from the public meeting that was called by the police in August on race
related crime in Nelson,” said Claire Nichols. “I am hoping to get some ideas from Dr Gazel as to how we can work
together as a community to promote positive race relations and celebrate our diversity.”
Dr Gazel will speak at a seminar at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology for students and new migrants on Monday
10th October. That evening she will address a public meeting, and will also be meeting with the Nelson police to discuss
policing and community race relations.
Prior to coming to New Zealand, Dr Gazel will be presenting a paper on Women’s Rights and Workers Rights in South
Africia at a conference in India.
