Historic day for SH20 welcomed by Auckland City
Auckland City is thrilled to see construction start on Transit New Zealand’s State Highway 20 Mt Roskill extension today.
Construction of the state highway extension marks the beginning of an essential alternative for people travelling around the city, and the region, and provides impetus for a number of key Auckland City projects linked to the new motorway.
“We are delighted that Transit has the Mt Roskill extension underway. State Highway 20 provides a vital transport link for Aucklanders travelling north, west and south of the city,” says the Mayor of Auckland city, Dick Hubbard.
“Auckland City’s role is to support and strengthen the local road network to ensure people have sustainable travel choices, and that our communities and businesses are connected and energised as a result.
“We have a number of key projects linking to this essential Mt Roskill extension, and it is fantastic to see work on this four kilometre piece of motorway start today.”
Auckland City initiatives such as the upgrade of Tiverton Road and Wolverton Street in New Windsor, the Waikaraka south-western cycleway, and the Dominion Road 2016 project are directly related to the Mt Roskill extension. The initiatives will create alternative travel choices and leverage off Transit’s state highway network. “Transport is this council’s number one priority. The transport targeted rate introduced this year signalled how serious we are to accelerate projects that serve a growing, international city,” says Mr Hubbard.
“Integrating work with the Mt Roskill extension is one example of how the council is working with transport partners to provide solutions for Aucklanders. Solutions that balance the needs of motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and people who use public transport.”
