Tamaki Campus to provide lesson in design
Auckland City Council today approved a plan change amending the controls in the District Plan applying to the University
of Auckland's Tamaki Campus.
Plan change 97 provides a new concept plan for the campus, enabling the development of a 'research integration campus',
which will allow the university to accommodate up to 6,000 students and the co-location of public and private partners
in the areas of research, teaching and community development.
The plan change applies specific urban design criteria to all buildings within 20m of the Morrin Road boundary of the
campus. They include: buildings must have a positive orientation to the road building facades fronting Morrin Road must
provide a varied and interesting frontage planting along Morrin Road will complement building frontages and their
relationship to the street.
In addition, the plan change imposes the following restrictions: requirement for a resource consent once parking spaces
exceed 1,230 height limit of 12m volcanic cone view protection controls minimum landscaped permeable surface area front
yards applied to buildings along Morrin and Merton Roads maximum floor areas.
The plan change also enables the council to require the University to undertake work on intersections that may be
affected by increasing numbers of people working or studying on the site and make financial contribution to road
upgrading works, if required by council. It also provides for monitoring the effects of traffic on surrounding streets,
if necessary.
The plan change had been the subject of an appeal to the Environment Court, but was recently settled there.
