For immediate release on 26 July 2005
New Zealand has been confirmed to host the prestigious fourth Commonwealth Local Government Conference in Auckland in
March 2007.
“This is the first time this conference has been hosted in the New Zealand/Asia Pacific region. We feel extremely
honoured this country has been chosen to host such a prominent event that brings together top local government leaders
from around the world,” says Local Government New Zealand’s President Basil Morrison.
The biennial Conference is organised by the Commonwealth Local Government Forum, of which Local Government New Zealand
is a member and Basil Morrison is a member of the executive. It is a unique event where policy recommendations are
formally presented for adoption to Commonwealth Heads of Government.
“The theme of the 2007 Conference is Delivering Development through Local Leadership. Spoken in the words of Carl
Wright, the Commonwealth Local Government Forum Secretary-General, this entails local leadership to promote local
economic development, local leadership to deliver essential services to the community and to ensure key social
objectives,” said Mr Morrison.
The Commonwealth Local Government Forum has more than 170 member organisations in over 40 Commonwealth countries
worldwide. The confirmation of the conference was announced by Mr Wright yesterday at the Local Government New Zealand
Conference in Christchurch.
