Refuse, traffic and Orakei Basin remain priorities for bylaw review
Four high priority bylaw reviews will continue following endorsement by the Planning and Regulatory Committee.
Under the Local Government Act 2002, all existing bylaws are to be reviewed within five years of coming into force and
therefore must be reviewed by 1 July 2008.
“There are 27 parts to the Auckland City Consolidated Bylaw and council has set priorites for each part,” says
Councillor Glenda Fryer, chair of the Planning and Regulatory Committee. “While we have received submissions from the
public to give priority to specific sections of the bylaw, this committee has agreed to progress the review
recommendations of our officers in order to meet the timeframes set by the Act.”
The four priority bylaw reviews confirmed by the Planning and Regulatory Committee are: Part 25 Traffic, review of
parking infringement processes, speed limits and bus lanes Part 19 Orakei Basin, to resolve jurisdiction issues Part 22
Refuse, where the issue of illegal dumping of rubbish in council roads and parks costs $1.25 million per annum Part 1
Bylaw administration, where issues linked to definitions and changes in enforcement powers need to be addressed.
The bylaw review priority list will be forwarded to community boards for their information.
“Community boards understand how bylaws affect communities,” says Councillor Fryer. “We appreciate their feedback on the
prioritisation of bylaws as this is an open and inclusive process.”
