Wharf upgrade to disrupt Northcote Point ferry services
Northcote Point ferry services will be halted for three weeks from the start of November, while the wharf is upgraded
and extra security systems are installed.
The upgrade project, which includes construction of a protective canopy along the wharf and a public viewing platform,
is the final stage of a Northcote Point wharf improvement programme that began in 2002.
The Auckland Regional Transport Network Limited Operations Manager, Kevin Brown, says ferries will not stop at the
Northcote Point wharf from November 1 – November 19, to allow access for heavy construction.
“Birkenhead Transport Buses will carry ferry passengers free of charge from Northcote Point to the city in the morning
and afternoon peak times, to ensure passengers can still get to and from work”.
Passengers travelling during off-peak times will need to contact Rideline (09) 366 6400 about alternative transport
options, or visit www.rideline.co.nz From November 22 to December 17 the wharf will also be closed during the middle of
the day, between 9 am and 4pm, while the canopy is built. However morning and afternoon peak ferries will still run, and
normal ferry services will operate on weekends.
Mr Brown says ARTNL have been working with the Auckland Regional Council and the ferry operator, Fullers, to ensure that
any disruption to passengers is minimised.
“We are giving a popular public facility a much needed upgrade, and we are asking passengers to bear with us while the
project is carried out over the next few weeks”.
The project also includes an upgrade of security measures at the wharf. “ARTNL are installing a CCTV system, which will
monitor the wharf, carpark and access walkway, and we will also position extra lighting for greater security”, he says.
The wharf upgrade is due to be completed around the end of the year.
