Quay Street upgrade on track
Work on the new look Quay Street will begin on Monday, 16 August 2004.
The chairperson of Auckland City’s Recreation and Events Committee, Councillor Scott Milne, says the aim of the $7
million street upgrade is to transform Quay Street into an attractive, high quality, people-friendly public space.
“This is great for the people of Auckland and the many visitors who frequent this area. Once complete the new look Quay
Street will transform this crucial CBD street into one we can all take pride in and improve the interface between the
city and the sea. It is a significant step in revitalising Auckland’s CBD into a world class city centre in which to
live, work and play,” he says.
The work includes improved lighting, artworks, the addition of more street furniture, the planting of 70 Pohutakawa
trees and reducing traffic lane widths to 3.0 and 3.2 metres to enable the footpaths to be widened on the north side of
the street.
The first stage of the work includes both sides of Quay Street from the proposed Arena site in the east to the Eastern
Viaduct in the west, except for the area between the ferry building and Princess Wharf on the sea side of the street.
This area is commonly referred to as Kingslow Landing.
This first stage of the work is due for completion by March 2005. All work will cease between 5 and 27 December 2004 to
accommodate the Christmas rush.
“We will make every effort to keep disruption to a minimum, although we realise noise and dust will be a nuisance.”
“Auckland City is also working with relevant service providers to ensure work in the street is carried out in a
co-operative manner, ” says Mr Milne.
Affected businesses will be kept informed of progress via regular mail drops. Information will also be available via the
Auckland City call centre (09) 379 2020 and posted on the Auckland City website, www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/cbd.
The contractors, Dominion Constructors Limited, have a proven track record in delivering high quality street
environments. Recent examples of their work include the public space at the Viaduct and Britomart project.
