Green Light For New Interchange Welcomed
Manukau Mayor Sir Barry Curtis says a major project with tremendous economic benefits can now begin following the
announcement of funding approval for a new motorway interchange in Manukau.
Transfund has announced it will fund construction of the Waiouru Interchange project beside the Otara power station on
the southern motorway, costing $66 million. Transfund will provide $44 million, with Manukau City Council providing the
remaining funding.
The interchange is required to facilitate growth in East Tamaki by allowing a much-needed, rapid connection between the
Waiouru Peninsular, which houses a major business and industrial area, and the southern motorway. Currently the only
access to the motorway is by a long route through residential streets.
The project is considered a vital part of planning for the continued economic growth of Manukau and of the Auckland
region.
Sir Barry Curtis says he is delighted by the decision. "There will be enormous benefits to the city as a whole once the
interchange is built.
"It's essential that East Tamaki area gains better access to the southern motorway because it is the largest employment
zone in the Auckland region, and is being held back at present.
"Tens of thousands of people work there already and the number is growing fast. Highbrook, the new hi-tech business park
being built on the Waiouru peninsular, will provide a further 15,000 further jobs within a decade.
"Planning for Highbrook is well advanced. Once is opened, it will become the leading hi-tech business park in
Australasia and will be set in a superb landscaped that respects and preserves the natural environment."
