Invitation to candidates' briefing
The North Shore City Council is holding a briefing session on Thursday, July 29 at 7pm, for prospective candidates in this year's local government elections.
The meeting is aimed at those thinking of running for the positions of mayor, councillor or community board member.
"This is an opportunity for people interested in standing in the 2004 elections to learn more about the election process, the role of local government and in particular the role of an elected member. It's also a chance to have any questions answered," says North Shore City's electoral officer, Peter McArthur.
Run by an independent facilitator, the briefing will be held at the council's head office in The Strand, Takapuna.
"Anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election as long as they are a New Zealand citizen and enrolled on the electoral roll at the time nominations close," Mr McArthur says.
Nominations for candidates open on July 21 and close on August 20. Voting papers will be sent out from September 17 and to be counted must be received by the electoral officer by noon on election day, October 9.
For further information on standing as a candidate or finding out about their local elected representatives, people are invited to visit the council's website http://www.northshorecity.govt.nz or call Peter McArthur on 486 8689.
