CCTV cameras for Mangere and Otara town centres
The Community Safety Committee today approved the installation of two CCTV (closed circuit television) sites of five
cameras each for the Otara and Mangere town centres.
Installation of the cameras in Otara will begin on 7 May and in Mangere on 1 July. The systems will be fully operational
between six to eight weeks after installation begins.
Public consultation conducted by Council's CCTV Project Group found strong support for installation of the cameras by
the Otara Community Board, and community groups and key agencies in both the Otara and Mangere wards.
"Having CCTV in the town centres will also help monitor Council's alcohol bans in these areas, ensuring increased safety
and well-being of our residents," says Councillor Alan McIntyre, Deputy Chairperson of the Community Safety Committee.
Each site of five cameras will cost $60,000 to set up. The annual operating cost will be around $54,000.
