Greater Wellington welcomes government transport initiative
Greater Wellington Regional Council has welcomed the Government’s invitation to work on a transport package to find
solutions to funding the region’s transport infrastructure.
“Greater Wellington has been working with the Government for some time on solutions to the region’s transport issues,
and it makes sense to pull this work together into one process,” said Terry McDavitt, Deputy Chairperson of Greater
Wellington Regional Council.
“We are looking forward to a constructive discussion with the government about the priorities for funding, and to
finding solutions to the funding gap for upgrading road and rail infrastructure.
Mr McDavitt said that the greater Wellington region already had a well-developed regional land transport strategy that
identified the priorities for new and upgraded infrastructure.
“The region’s councils, and other key stakeholders, have worked together to develop a priority list for both road and
rail. In that sense we are in a good position to make progress. What we are lacking are the resources to fund these
projects. That is why it is so important for the government to take a lead on this issue.”
