NZ Red Cross Launches Flood Appeal
New Zealand Red Cross today launched an emergency appeal to help assist people affected by flooding in the lower North
Island and upper South Island.
"As the scale of this disaster becomes apparent, it is obvious that a massive recovery job is needed," said New Zealand
Red Cross Director General, Flora Gilkison.
"Hundreds of people have lost their homes or possessions, and lives have been turned upside-down." "Our mission is to
protect human life and alleviate suffering where-ever it occurs in the world. Now, it is time to help fellow New
Zealanders in need."
Funds raised will be provided to projects nominated by Mayoral relief funds and the Ministry of Civil Defence and
Emergency Management, which aim to alleviate the short-term needs of affected people.
"New Zealanders are always very generous in supporting the victims of natural disasters overseas," Mrs Gilkison said.
"We hope they will also show their support for fellow Kiwis at this difficult time.
She said both the National Bank and the ANZ Bank have already shown their support by donating $50,000 each to the
