Auckland’s bigger better birthday bash
There’s no better place to be than in Auckland city this Anniversary weekend as it celebrates its 164th birthday with
thrilling events both on and off the water.
Auckland City is urging people to get right behind the fiercely contested Anniversary Day Regatta, which is also
Auckland’s oldest sporting event and one of the world’s biggest one-day regattas.
If you’re not out on the water, the next best vantage points to enjoy everything from tiny Optimists to classic yachts
will be from North Head, Bastion Point or any of the beaches along Tamaki Drive.
The action back on dry land also includes events and attractions to suit almost all ages and tastes including:
- Auckland City Music in Parks events (including the ever popular Dancing in the Streets)
- special exhibitions at MOTAT, Auckland War Memorial Museum and New Zealand National Maritime Museum exhibitions
- Wine and Jazz Summer Series at Viaduct Harbour
- Open Air Cinema, Te Wero Island, Viaduct Harbour
- January Jazz, Princes Wharf.
”For a 164 year-old, the city seems to be showing more youthful vigour than ever. Artistic cultural and sporting
development is flourishing and we would love to see Aucklanders new and old really enjoying a day of celebration,” says
Recreation and Events Committee chairperson, Councillor Scott Milne.
“My advice is that Aucklanders take a day to reflect on what a wonderful place they live in and use one of the dozens of
opportunities within the city to have a really fun day,” says Mr Milne.
