'Kiwi Life' New Settlers' Orientation Programme Launch
A new migrant orientation programme is to be run from the Highland Park Community House (Aviemore Drive, Highland Park).
Called Kiwi Life, the programme is supported by the Manukau City Council and aims to help people new to New Zealand to settle well in the area.
Community House Co-ordinator Susan Sims says that the programme was developed in support of the Council's New Settlers' Policy. "Over 50 percent of our community house users are new to the community. They have been asking for support programmes to help them settle here."
Programme designer and tutor Sandra Taylor says that the four 2-hour modules are free of charge.
Module one covers finding a job including interview preparation, writing a CV for the New Zealand market, fielding questions, resources and helpful hints. Module two is on the family – schools, expectations, activities, ESOL classes, assistance for elderly relatives, and problem solving.
"We also have two modules covering purchasing property, investment and establishing a credit history in New Zealand. These modules are delivered by senior bank employees who will guide people through the banking process and options for investing in New Zealand," says Ms Taylor.
"Other modules will also be offered either free or at a small cost, including driver education, safety and security in the community and English classes."
The safety and security session will be provided by Safer Manukau and cover neighbourhood support, crime watch patrols, street sense, protecting your property, and protecting your vehicle.
Numbers will be limited to 10 per module to ensure one on one time with the tutor and hands-on training. The first course will begin on 10 February 2004.
People interested in attending need to register at the Howick Information Centre, 91 Picton Street or phone 534 4796.
