Chance to comment on proposed changes to Chch speed limits
Christchurch City Council has agreed to take proposed changes to speed limits on selected roads in the city out for
wider consultation with communities and other stakeholders.
Ongoing monitoring of traffic speeds by Council as well as feedback from the public and Community Boards has identified
a number of changes that should be made to speed limits on some roads around the city.
�gThe growth of new subdivisions and development of rural and semi-rural areas around Christchurch will result in some
speed limits being reduced. More use is being made of 60km/h and 80km/h speed limits to reflect changing road
environments and increased traffic volumes on arterial roads,�h says Brian Neill, Council traffic engineer.
Preliminary discussions on the proposed changes have been held with representatives from the Police, New Zealand
Automobile Association, the Land Transport Safety Authority, Transit New Zealand and the Road Transport Forum.
An information brochure explaining the proposed changes will be distributed to the communities affected and other
stakeholder organisations. Once feedback has been received, it will be reported to the relevant Community Boards and
forwarded to the October 2003 meeting of the Sustainable Transport and Utilities Committee for consideration and action.
