Wellesley Street East improvements begin this week
Transit New Zealand and Auckland City advise all road users that road works have started in the Wellesley Street
East/Princes Street area.
Work at this location will involve the construction of new traffic islands, changes to lane markings and general
landscaping.
During the ten-week programme, parking on both sides of Wellesley Street East will be affected, and some traffic
movements will be restricted. The most notable restriction will be that traffic will no longer be able to turn right
from Princes Street into Wellesley Street East.
Pedestrians are advised to take particular care in this area, and are asked to use the footbridge that passes over
Wellesley Street East between Albert Park and Auckland University of Technology.
The majority of the work will take place from 7am to 7pm, Mondays to Saturdays. However Sundays and night work will be
required in some circumstances.
When completed, the improvements will help to reduce the volume of through traffic which traverses the most heavily
pedestrianised part of the city. The work is also required to allow Wellesley Street East to connect to the new
Wellesley Street bridge, which will allow direct access across Grafton Gully to Grafton Road and the hospital. The new
bridge, which will also feature new motorway on and off-ramps, is scheduled to open in early October.
