Upper Hutt City Is Holding A Civic Reception For Irene Van Dyk
His Worship the Mayor, Wayne Guppy will accompany Irene van Dyk on Friday 8th August 2003 on a tour of the local primary
and Intermediate Schools. Irene will spend approximately 15 – 20 minutes at each school and Mayor Guppy is sure that all
the students will be excited at the prospect of meeting Irene.
At 2.00pm they will travel up Main Street, Upper Hutt from the King Street end and will then stop at the Civic Centre
where members of netball teams and staff and students from the three central schools, St Joseph’s, Oxford Crescent and
Upper Hutt Schools will assemble where the Mayor will make a presentation to Irene on behalf of all the citizens of
Upper Hutt. Mayor Wayne Guppy says Upper Hutt is very proud of the strong ties Irene has with the city and welcomes all
Wellingtonians to come and join in the festivities. Train connections and the Stagecoach Flyer drop passengers very
close to the celebration location.
After emigrating from South Africa, Irene, her husband Christie and daughter Bianca made Upper Hutt their home and Irene
is a teacher at Fergusson Intermediate School here in Upper Hutt. “We want to show Irene that all of Upper Hutt is proud
of her achievement and the part she played in bringing home the World Netball Championship”, Mayor Guppy said.
