RAW 2003 Youth Art on Show
Auckland’s youth are enjoying the opportunity of trading creative ideas and experiences with leading local artists and
cultural workers.
The programme, entitled RAW, is a youth based arts project with a focus on providing a creative outlet for young people
in Auckland to express their issues through the arts.
The first phase of the project ran at ignite03 at The Edge, 7 to11 April, with the second phase being held during the
April school holidays at Auckland City’s Artstation in Ponsonby.
Tiffany de Castro, project manager and lead artist, says the programme targets youth who are passionate about exploring
and celebrating identity through creativity. Tamati Te Nohotu and Reverend Mua Pua are leading the workshop with 15
young people from a variety of backgrounds. They will explore identity issues through theatre, storytelling and visual
arts.
The workshop participants will create a visual statement in the form of ten “identity flags.”
Standing six metres high, the flags will be on display in Western Park, Ponsonby Road for two weeks.
There will be a ceremony and performance presentation on 24 April. Auckland City’s recreation and events committee
chairperson Scott Milne believes the support of such programmes is integral to the development of the creative talents
of Auckland’s youth.
