Transit begins repair work on SH20 Wiri Station Road
Transit New Zealand announced today that it has begun chip sealing and drainage work on sections of SH20Wiri Station Road between Rainbow’s End and Roscommon Road. Weather permitting, the work will be completed by mid August and more permanent repairs and long term drainage will be carried out in summer.
Regional Manager Wayne McDonald said the work was necessary to repair sections of the 3 km road surface which had begun deteriorating.
“The heavy rain this winter, combined with the very high traffic volumes – especially heavy vehicles – using Wiri Station Road, has resulted in surface cracking in parts of the road,” he said.
Mr McDonald said that the first priority would be to place chip seal to act as waterproofing on those sections worst affected. At the same time work would be started to install drainage pipes alongside the road.
“We have to prevent further water from any further winter rains causing any more damage which would in turn cause serious traffic delays and inconvenience and endanger road users.”
All work will be carried out in order to minimise the effect on traffic, especially during the day. The only daytime closures will take place on Sundays. All other closures will be at night between 8pm and 5 am.
