Get rid of that rubbish and junk the junk!
Don’t have a trailer? Have a family member who stores junk? It's that time of the year when Manukau residents can get rid of all those unused and unwanted items stored in back yards and garages.
Inorganic rubbish collections will begin in Mangere Ward in August and move across the city, finishing in the Clevedon ward in mid December.
Patricia Facenfield, Senior Policy Analyst says it is important that people only put rubbish out the weekend before the collection for the safety of others in the street and to keep the area clean.
"Most people look forward to inorganic collections because it is an easy way to get rid of that unwanted rubbish. But there is also a certain amount of responsibility that goes with the collection and that's keeping to the dates specified and encouraging your neighbours to do the same. It also makes it easier for everyone if small loose items are packaged and sealed in cardboard boxes or strong plastic bags".
All residents will receive a green leaflet in their mailbox ten days before collection in their area. Residents are asked to put their refuse out the weekend immediately prior to the collection date on their leaflet. Indicative dates have been set for each ward. Everyone will receive their collection before Christmas but only during the designated week for their area.
If people are unsure about when to put inorganic rubbish out, have missed or lost their green leaflet, or have any questions they can call Council's 24 hour Call Centre on 262 5104.
There will be three collections made within a day or so of each other. The first one will take all inorganic materials including carpets, beds, bric a brac, furniture and rubbish. Separate collections will take place for scrap metal including household appliances and tyres.
Paint cans will only be collected if they are empty. Paint cans that aren't empty as well as other hazardous goods can be disposed of at four HazMobile days which will be advertised in community newspapers and through another letterbox drop in each area just prior to the collection. Information is also available on Council's website www.manukau.govt.nz or by calling Manukau City Council's Call Centre 262 5104.
Items that won't be collected, besides hazardous materials, include garden waste and soil, household renovation materials, bricks and broken concrete, fibrolite, whole car bodies and whole water tanks, glass and anything else that can't be lifted by two people.
