Young artists try fresh take on 'Ned' The Ned Kelly Schools Art competition
Local school students are creating their own versions of Ned Kelly's exploits, for an art competition that will be
displayed at Capital E, Civic Square from Saturday 20 April to Sunday 19 May.
The competition is open to Wellington school students aged 5 to 18, who can submit paintings or sculptures based on
Sidney Nolan's Ned Kelly Series. Students can show another event or image from the Ned Kelly story, or base their work
on one of Nolan's paintings. Nolan's 27 paintings on the life of the famous bushranger are currently on display at City
Gallery Wellington until 19 May.
"This competition gives students a chance to respond to Nolan's narrative paintings or let their imaginations run wild
and portray their own 'Ned' images, while working within the schools art curriculum," says Justine McLisky, education
coordinator, City Gallery Wellington.
The competition has been organised jointly by City Gallery Wellington and Capital E. Admission is free, and the public
will have a chance to vote for their own favourite work during the exhibition. There are three age group categories -
Junior (5 - 8 years old); Intermediate (9 - 12 years old) and Senior (13 - 18 years old). Winner and runners-up prizes
will be awarded in each category.
Students wishing to enter should talk to their teacher about the competition, says Justine McLisky. They have until
Tuesday 16 April, 5pm to submit their work.

levels, and other activities including an art workshop option for Yrs 5-10. Discounted admission cost for pre-booked
