Former New Zealand Navy Captain Ian Bradley has been elected unopposed as the new Chair of the Auckland Regional Council (ARC) Strategic Policy Committee.
Cr. Bradley who has been deputy chair of ARC’s Parks and Heritage Committee is a North Shore resident and is in his first term with the Council. Cr. Bradley entered the local government scene with the Devonport Borough Council (1983-86) and Auckland Regional Authority (1986-88). He is currently employed by the Department of Conservation.
Cr.Bradley has a special interest in the rate of development and is concerned about retaining landscape values. With the ARC currently involved in regional proposals such as the Air Land and Water Plan, variations to the Regional Plan: Coastal, and Direct Rating he sees “terrific challenges and opportunities” ahead for the ARC and the region. He adds “With all the noise being generated around local government issues, the achievements of the ARC tend to be underrated.”
New ARC chairperson Gwen Bull congratulated Cr. Bradley and is encouraged by what he brings to the position. “If we are to achieve our objectives for the region we need a motivated council and a participating public. I am happy for his election and look forward to facing the challenges ahead with my council.”
After leaving the navy Cr. Bradley worked in a number of industries, appeared on television as an actor and Director, wrote his own column ‘One Eyed’ for the suburban papers and scripted and performed ‘Bradley’s Broadsides’ nightly on the ZB Network. He has run his own businesses for some years.
