Victory To CAP - West Auckland Wastewater Charge Knocked Back!
The move within the Waitakere City Council to introduce a $100 wasewater charge throughout the city was defeated today.
Right wing GO WAITAKERE councillors realised that three of their number were missing before the council meeting was due to commence, this morning at 9.30am.
Determined to avoid facing a voting defeat of their flat-rate proposal, they refused to join the meeting - meaning that a quorum was not available and the council meeting was ultimately abandoned.
Citizens Against Privatisation have campaigned vigorously in the few weeks since they have learnt of the wastewater charge proposal, and CAP members and supporters turned out in force, and were jubilant at the outcome - although apalled at the anti-democratic behaviour of the GO WAITAKERE councillors.. Three Water Pressure Group, members were among those who offered solidarity to Citizens Against Privatisation.
CONGRATULATIONS TO CAP!

MEDIA RELEASE
Re: Go Waitakere boycott of Sept 5th meeting.
Due to the huge community opposition regarding the introduction of the flat charge for waste water CAP believe progressive Councilliors felt encouraged to oppose the flat charge.
Go Waitakere decision to boycott the meeting only came when they realised the vote on the $100 charge would be lost. ( Due to absences)
Meredydd Barrar CAP says:
"Go Waitakeres undemocratic behaviour is despicable they knew the vote would be lost and attempted to pervert the course of democracy by boycotting the meeting. Fortunately for the community the plan backfired as this immoral waste water charge cannot now be implemented".
"Go Waitakere are now totally discredited as a political force in West Auckland".
CAP will remain vigilant in case there is an attempt to introduce this iniquitous charge in the future. We have kept our 2700 submissions just in case.
