SIGN OFFENSIVE SAYS COUNCILLOR
Councillor Kay McKelvie advises that Auckland City Council has asked for a determination from the Advertising Standards Authority as to whether the sign on St Lukes Road that advertises adult videos, toys and Magazines meets their criteria of offensive and objectionable advertising. The advertisement advertises how to access a web page address.
“Depicting semi-naked woman on a sign at a major intersection for a leading retail complex to advertise adult videos is offensive,” she said. “Residents of the area are entitled to go about their daily business without being assailed by such inappropriate advertising.”
Auckland City has increasing difficulty monitoring and enforcing its signs by-law and is looking for a ruling from the Advertising Standards Authority so that it can tackle the issue of whether this sign is decent. Councillor McKelvie believes that Council should take a role in the community in ensuring that offensive material is not tolerated.
