The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Friday:
Situation: A northwest flow strengthens ahead of a trough in the Tasman Sea. The trough is expected to move onto the
South Island tonight then become slow moving over the country on Tuesday. On Wednesday a southerly flow spreads over the
country then weakens on Thursday as a high in the north Tasman Sea pushes a ridge back onto the South Island. On Friday
high pressure covers most of the country.
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA and TAUPO: Cloudy at times today with a few showers
likely. Rain developing tomorrow but falls not reaching Bay of Plenty until late afternoon. Patchy rain on Wednesday.
Further rain at first Thursday with southerlies freshening. Rain clearing late in the day. Mostly fine on Friday.
WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: Mostly cloudy today with a few showers likely
and gusty northwest winds. Showers turning to rain tomorrow. Patchy rain on Wednesday becoming heavier later. Rain
clearing and becoming mostly fine early Thursday with southerly winds. Fine again Friday.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Mainly fine today apart from some high cloud about Wairarapa. Tomorrow, high cloud
thickening with gusty northwest winds. Some rain spreading east off the ranges at times. Wednesday sees a period of rain
in most areas, colder southerlies working into Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay later. Rain about Gisborne on Thursday. Showers
and fine breaks elsewhere. Becoming fine to most places on Friday but a few showers remain about Gisborne.
WELLINGTON: Cloudy and windy today with a few showers later. Outbreaks of rain tomorrow, northerlies easing. More
persistent rain Wednesday and colder with southerlies developing. Showers gradually clearing Thursday. Mainly fine on
Friday.
NELSON: Cloud increasing today with drizzle developing. A period of rain tomorrow with northerlies. Rain areas clearing
Wednesday, winds turning southwest. Mainly fine Thursday and Friday.
MARLBOROUGH, CANTERBURY and OTAGO: High cloud thickening with rain about the Alps and western ranges spreading elsewhere
at times. Rain reaching most places tomorrow. During Wednesday skies slowly clearing from the south about Canterbury and
Otago but further north patchy rain persisting. Mainly fine everywhere Thursday and Friday.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Rain today. Heavy falls expected south of Hokitika. Rain easing to showers tomorrow then
clearing about the fiords. Remaining showers clearing from Westland and Buller Wednesday, mainly fine elsewhere. Mainly
fine everywhere Thursday and Friday.
SOUTHLAND: Rain about the western ranges spreading further east today. Drizzle areas along the south coast and about
Stewart Island tomorrow with cloudy skies elsewhere. On Wednesday cloudy in the south again but inland becoming mainly
fine. Mainly fine everywhere Thursday and Friday.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: Long fine periods today then skies cloudier tomorrow. Rain on Wednesday. Rain easing to showers on
Thursday with cold southerlies developing. Further showers and southerlies on Friday.
