Weather Workshop: 5 day forecast for NZ

The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Tuesday:

Situation: A shallow low lies just west of the country today and should move northeast over the North Island. Tomorrow a high lies over the North Island and a northwest flow develops over the South Island. The northwest flow spreads over the remainder of the country on Sunday as the high weakens and drifts northeast of the North Island. On Monday a front moves onto the South Island from the Tasman Sea and is followed by a cooler southwesterly flow. On Tuesday the front becomes slow moving over central New Zealand. A high in the Tasman Sea pushes a ridge onto the lower South Island.

NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: Cloud and fine breaks today with a few showers likely. Becoming fine tomorrow. Cloudy at times on Sunday. Patchy rain developing on Monday with gusty northwesterlies. Outbreaks of rain from Taranaki southwards on Tuesday but only patchy falls further north.

COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA and TAUPO: Cloud increasing today then a few late showers. Mostly fine tomorrow and Sunday. Cloud increasing Monday with northwest winds. Some patchy rain spreading from the west on Tuesday.

GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Mainly fine at first but a few showers spread north later. Tomorrow, a few showers clearing and becoming fine. Mostly fine on Sunday. High cloud increasing Monday with patchy rain developing about Wairarapa later. Northwesterlies becoming strong. Rain at times south of Napier on Tuesday with thickening high cloud further north.

WELLINGTON: Cloud and fine breaks today with a few showers likely. Becoming fine tomorrow. Mostly cloudy on Sunday with gusty northerlies. Rain developing on Monday with strong northwest winds. Further outbreaks of rain on Tuesday with southeasterlies developing.

NELSON: Scattered rain clearing today. Mainly fine tomorrow, some high cloud developing later. High cloud again on Sunday but remaining dry. Rain developing on Monday with gusty northwest winds. Further outbreaks of rain on Tuesday.

MARLBOROUGH and CANTERBURY: Becoming fine today. Mostly fine tomorrow but with increasing high cloud about Canterbury. High cloud thickening on Sunday with warm gusty northwesterlies. Rain on Monday with northwesterlies turning southwest. Rain about Marlborough on Tuesday but easing to a few showers further south.

BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Mostly cloudy with remaining rain areas about Buller clearing. Tomorrow and Sunday, Rain south of the glaciers with cloudy skies elsewhere. Widespread rain on Monday with heavy falls likely. Rain about Buller on Tuesday but becoming fine further south.

OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: Fine inland today. A few cloudy periods about the coast. High cloud tomorrow with northwest winds. Rain in the west on Sunday. Thickening high cloud and warm gusty northwesterlies elsewhere. Rain breaking to showers on Monday with southwest winds developing. Mainly fine on Tuesday.

CHATHAM ISLANDS: Mostly cloudy with a few showers today and tomorrow. A few cloudy periods but dry on Sunday. Cloudy with showers and gusty northwesterlies on Monday. Rain developing on Tuesday.
