Workshop:
The Situation: A high over the North Island is drifting northeast. A northwest flow is strengthening over the South Island.
And now the forecast to midnight tonight:
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TAIHAPE and TAUPO: Mainly fine but cloud increasing about the western coast towards evening. Northwest winds freshening.
TARANAKI, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: Cloud increasing with a few drizzle patches developing towards evening. Northwest winds strengthening.
WELLINGTON: Cloud increasing with drizzle developing about the northern suburbs. Northerly winds becoming strong during the afternoon and rising to gale force after dark.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Mainly fine apart from increasing high cloud south of Napier. Northwest winds, becoming strong about Wairarapa after dark.
NELSON: Fine at first but high cloud developing later. Northwest winds.
MARLBOROUGH and CANTERBURY: Mainly fine at first. High cloud developing later with patchy rain about the alps. Northeast winds about the coast and northwesterlies inland.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Showers about Fiordland turning to rain and spreading elsewhere today with heavy falls south of Hokitika tonight. Northwest winds.
OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: High cloud increasing today with rain about the western ranges. West to northwest winds rising to gales force about Southland and inland part of Otago later.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: A mix of cloud and fine breaks with northwesterlies developing.
THE OUTLOOK FOR TOMORROW: Rain over most of the South Island with strong to gale force northwesterlies. Northerlies reach storm force about Cook Strait with showers in the west of the North Island and high cloud elsewhere. At the Chatham Islands, cloudy with strengthening northwesterlies.
