Weather Workshop Five Day Forecast

Issued by Weather Workshop on Friday, July 23, 1999 at Noon

The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Tuesday.

Situation: A low to the west of the country should move onto the North Island today. Tomorrow the low lies east of the North Island and a south to southwest flow covers the country. On Sunday and Monday a pool of very cold air is expected to move north bringing wintry conditions to much of the South Island and lower North Island. On Tuesday cold showery weather continues for much of the country but a high in the Tasman Sea pushes a ridge onto the lower South Island.

NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA and WAIKATO: Showery today with thunderstorms likely later. A few showers tomorrow then clearing on Sunday. Showers redeveloping on Monday then becoming colder on Tuesday with a period of rain.

WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE ,TAUPO, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: A few showers today with isolated thunderstorms possible north of Taranaki. Showers clearing during Saturday with southerly winds. Cloud and fine breaks on Sunday then becoming showery again Monday with snow to the central plateau later. Showery and cold on Tuesday with further snow to the high country.

BAY of PLENTY and ROTORUA: Showery today with isolated thunderstorms developing in western Bay of Plenty. Becoming fine tomorrow and mainly fine on Sunday. Showers developing on Monday. Showery and cold on Tuesday.

GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Patchy rain developing about Gisborne and northern Hawkes bay today otherwise mainly fine. A few coastal showers clearing tomorrow then mainly fine. Fine on Sunday. Showers and cold southwesterlies on Monday and Tuesday with snow lowering about the ranges.

WELLINGTON: Cloud and fine breaks today with drizzle patches developing later. A few early showers clearing on Saturday. Cloud increasing on Sunday with showers after dark. Showers and strong southerly winds Monday and Tuesday with snow lowering about the eastern ranges.

NELSON: Mainly fine today apart from increasing cloud later. Becoming fine tomorrow and remaining fine on Sunday. Showers and cold southerlies developing on Monday and remaining showery and cold on Tuesday.

MARLBOROUGH: Mainly fine inland today but a few drizzle patches about the Kaikoura coast. Becoming fine Saturday but showers and southwesterly winds returning late Sunday. Further showers on Monday and Tuesday with snow about the ranges.

BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Cloud and fine breaks today and tomorrow with a few showers about Fiordland. Showers and cold southwesterlies spread north from Sunday afternoon with snow to the ranges. Showery and cold on Monday with further snow to the ranges. Slowly becoming fine from the south on Tuesday.

CANTERBURY, OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: Drizzle patches about coastal Canterbury today. Elsewhere a mix of cloud and fine breaks. Tomorrow, a few coastal showers in Southland and Otago but becoming fine elsewhere. Very cold southerly winds and showers spreading north on Sunday with snow lowering about the ranges. Wintry showers Monday with snow to low levels. Becoming fine in Otago and Southland on Tuesday but showers continue in Canterbury with further snow to the ranges there.

CHATHAM ISLANDS: Mostly cloudy with showers from today through until Monday. Showers turn to rain on Tuesday with strong northeasterlies.
