The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Sunday.
Situation: A disturbed westerly flow covers much of New Zealand today and tomorrow. A trough within this flow crosses the country today. Late on Thursday a low in the central Tasman Sea advances onto New Zealand. The low then covers much of the country on Friday and moves away to the east on Saturday allowing a colder southerly flow to spread over New Zealand. A very cold pool of air is expected to move onto the South Island on Sunday bringing wintry conditions.
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE ,TAUPO, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: Widespread rain today easing to a few showers this afternoon. One or two further showers tomorrow with increasing fine periods. Further showers and rain on Friday with gusty westerly winds developing. Showers and cold southwesterlies on Saturday easing for a time on Sunday.
BAY of PLENTY and ROTORUA: A period of rain today easing to one or two showers this evening. Becoming mostly fine on tomorrow but another period of rain develops on Friday with gusty westerly winds. Further showers on Saturday but becoming mostly fine on Sunday.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Mostly fine today but for areas of high cloud with rain about the ranges. Brief morning rain clearing tomorrow and becoming fine. High cloud increasing Friday with late rain spreading from the west. Cold and showery on Saturday with gusty southerly winds. Morning showers clearing Sunday with winds tending westerly.
WELLINGTON: Cloudy today with showers at times. Mostly fine tomorrow. Rain developing Friday with northwesterly winds. Cold and showery Saturday with strong southerly winds but showers clearing early Sunday with the winds tending northwest.
NELSON and MARLBOROUGH: A few showers today. Mostly fine tomorrow but rain developing Friday. Showers and cold southerly winds during Saturday clearing early Sunday with the winds tending westerly.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Showers at times today and tomorrow. Widespread rain on Friday easing to showers later. Becoming fine for a time on Saturday but rain and cold southerly winds spread north on Sunday.
CANTERBURY and OTAGO: Cloud and coastal fog areas clearing today and becoming mostly fine. Mainly fine tomorrow but for increasing high cloud. Rain developing Friday with cold southeasterlies later and snow lowering about the ranges. Morning showers clearing on Saturday. Very cold southerly winds and showers spreading north on Sunday with snow to low levels.
SOUTHLAND: Cloudy today with patchy rain possible. Mostly fine tomorrow but for increasing high cloud. Scattered rain and southeasterly winds developing Friday. Becoming mostly fine on Saturday but rain and very cold southerly winds developing on Sunday with snow to low levels.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: Continuing unsettled for much of the period with rain or showers at times. Becoming colder on Saturday with southeasterly winds developing. Showers easing Sunday with winds tending westerly.
