Weather Workshop: 5 day forecast for NZ

The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Friday.

Situation: A trough of low pressure with its main centre near Cook Strait is slowly moving east today. Tomorrow lowest pressures should lie near the Chatham Islands with a westerly flow expected over much of mainland New Zealand. Westerlies should persist Wednesday and Thursday with pressures remaining low far to the south of the country. Friday sees the flow turning southwest as an anticyclone moves into the western Tasman Sea.

NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY, ROTORUA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE ,TAUPO, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: For much of the period a mix of showers and fine periods with westerlies. Showers are likely to be heavy at times, chiefly in western areas. Longer fine spells from Bay of Plenty to Taupo, especially tomorrow and Wednesday.

GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Cloudy and dry north of Napier today but elsewhere a few outbreaks of rain. From tomorrow onwards showery about the main ranges but further east mainly fine with west to northwest winds. On Friday showers may become widespread later in Wairarapa.

WELLINGTON: Further rain at times today. Tomorrow and thru to Thursday mostly fine weather but expect showers from time to time about northern places with northwest winds. Showers more widespread Friday with southerlies developing.

NELSON and MARLBOROUGH: Rain clearing from the west today. Tomorrow and up until Thursday showers spreading from the western ranges from time to time but long fine periods also. More widespread showers Friday.

BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Rain or showers for much of the period with west to northwest winds. Friday sees showers clearing from the south with the flow turning southwest.

CANTERBURY and OTAGO: Further drizzly rain until early tomorrow then skies gradually clearing, although showers may persist about the Canterbury coast for a time. Showery about the main divide and western ranges after that with mostly fine weather elsewhere but during Friday showers may become more widespread as colder southwesterlies work northward.

SOUTHLAND: Cloudy with patchy rain today and tomorrow. A period of more widespread rain Wednesday. Further unsettled conditions after that. Cold southerlies with snow to the ranges Friday.

CHATHAM ISLANDS: Continuing unsettled for much of the period with rain or showers at times.
