Weather Workshop: 5 day forecast for NZ

The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Thursday.

Situation: A high lies over much of the country today. A weak front is expected to move onto the far south of the South Island however and slowly spread north. Tomorrow sees the anticyclone centred over the North Island as a more active
trough of low pressure moves onto the lower South Island. A front crosses the South Island early on Tuesday and should clear the North Island early on Wednesday leaving a southwesterly airstream over the country. A weak ridge covers the country at first Thursday but a depression moves onto the upper North Island from the North Tasman Sea.

NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY, ROTORUA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TAUPO, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: A few light showers about eastern Northland today, elsewhere fine apart from cloudy periods in the west from Taranaki to Manawatu. Mostly fine tomorrow but late showers developing from Taranaki to Manawatu. On Tuesday, showers spread north, reaching Auckland after dark. Becoming fine in most places on Wednesday. On
Thursday continuing fine but late rain developing in Northland.

GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Fine today and tomorrow. Showers and southwesterlies spread north on Tuesday, reaching Gisborne late afternoon. Mainly fine on Wednesday but some coastal cloud on Thursday.

WELLINGTON: Mainly fine today. Cloud increasing tomorrow. Showers and southerlies developing early on Tuesday then becoming fine on Wednesday. Mainly fine on Thursday.

NELSON: Fine today and tomorrow. From Monday evening, cloud increasing about western areas. Showers and southwesterlies at first on Tuesday then clearing from afternoon. Fine on Wednesday and Thursday.

MARLBOROUGH and CANTERBURY: Mainly fine today but cloud and drizzly rain spread as far north as Banks Peninsula this evening. Drizzly rain becoming widespread in Canterbury tomorrow and also along the Kaikoura Coast but mainly dry in inland Marlborough. A southwest change spreads north early Tuesday with skies clearing inland but a few showers remain about the coast. Fine inland Wednesday and Thursday but cloudy at times about the coast.

BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Cloudy today with drizzle patches from Hokitika south. Drizzly rain becoming widespread tomorrow. A mix of cloud and fine breaks with a few showers on Tuesday. Fine to most places on Wednesday and Thursday but a few showers remain about southern Fiordland.

OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: Rain developing today then easing to showers tomorrow along with a cool southwest change. Expect snow to the ranges then clearing inland later. Cloudy on Tuesday with further showers. A few showers about the coast on Wednesday but becoming fine inland. Fine everywhere on Thursday.

CHATHAM ISLANDS: A few showers turning to rain today. Becoming mainly fine tomorrow Rain on Tuesday with cold southwesterlies again. Remaining showery on Wednesday and Thursday.
