The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Monday.
Situation: A large but slowly weakening anticyclone is centred just north of the North Island. A strong northwest flow develops over the South Island today and then over the lower North Island tomorrow as the high moves east away from the country. The weekend sees the trough crossing New Zealand with a southwest flow following. On Monday a high intensifies in the Tasman Sea and pushes a ridge onto the country.
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND,
COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA, WAIKATO,
WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI and TAUPO: A few cloudy periods in the
west today from Auckland down to Taumaranui. Mainly fine
elsewhere. Cloud increasing in most places tomorrow with a
few showers developing in western districts later. A period
of rain everywhere Saturday then easing to showers from the
south. Becoming fine Sunday. Monday, fine and frosty in most
places but a few areas of
cloud linger about the west
coast from Northland down to Waitomo.
TARANAKI, TAIHAPE, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: A mix of cloud and fine breaks today. Cloudy tomorrow with a few showers turning to rain after dark and strengthening northwesterlies. Rain easing to showers Saturday then clearing skies Sunday. Mostly fine on Monday.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Mainly fine today. High cloud increasing tomorrow with gusty northwesterlies. A period of rain spreads north on Saturday then eases to showers from the south later with a cool southwest change. Coastal showers clearing Sunday, fine weather expected elsewhere. On Monday, mainly fine apart from some coastal cloud.
WELLINGTON: Mainly fine today but cloud increasing later with strengthening northwesterlies. Cloud increasing Friday with showers developing later and gale northwesterlies. Rain easing to showers Saturday, a southerly change later. Showers clearing Sunday. A mix of cloud and fine breaks on Monday.
NELSON and MARLBOROUGH: Mainly fine today. Some cloud to the western ranges later. High cloud increasing tomorrow with late rain to the western ranges and a few falls spreading further east after dark. Widespread rain Saturday then clearing at night. Fine and frosty Sunday and Monday.
CANTERBURY: Fine today apart from high cloud. High cloud thickening tomorrow with patchy rain developing and gale northwesterlies. Showers and cool southwesterlies on Saturday. Becoming fine in most places Sunday but cloudy at times about the coast. Fine and frosty on Monday.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Rain becoming widespread today with persistent falls south of the glaciers. Rain again in most places tomorrow. Heavy falls possible over Fiordland. Saturday sees rain becoming confined to Buller with a clearance to most other areas, however showers persisting about the southern fiords. The odd shower again in the far south Sunday and Monday otherwise a mix of fine and cloudy weather.
OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: Areas of high cloud today with rain developing about the western ranges. A period of widespread rain tomorrow then showery later as cold southwesterlies slowly spread north. Snow about the ranges to low levels at night. Showers becoming confined to the south coast during Saturday with clearing skies elsewhere and frosty inland at night. Showery in the south again Sunday otherwise fine and frosty. Fine again on Monday but a few cloudy periods about the Southland coast.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: Mainly fine today. Cloudy and dry with northwesterlies strengthening tomorrow. Rain Saturday then colder with southwesterlies from afternoon. Cold and showery Sunday. Showers slowly clearing on Monday.
