Weather Workshop: Extended Forecast

The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Wednesday.

Situation: A ridge of high pressure affects most places today. Tomorrow the ridge moves away to the east as a trough of low pressure moves onto the country from the eastern Tasman Sea. Monday sees the trough slow moving over the North Island while a new ridge spreads onto much of the South Island from the west. During Tuesday and Wednesday the ridge intensifies in the south while an area of low pressure slowly drifts east of the North Island.

NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE and TAUPO: On or two showers persisting from Auckland north today, elsewhere mainly fine. Tomorrow cloud increasing, scattered rain developing over Northland during the afternoon and spreading further south to affect many western places towards the end of the day. From Bay of Plenty to Taupo, however, remaining dry. Rain or showers everywhere Monday. Tuesday sees rain gradually becoming confined to the main eastern ranges with showers clearing further west. Mainly fine Wednesday but from Coromandel Peninsula to Northland a few light showers remaining.

WANGANUI and MANAWATU: Fine today. Cloud increasing tomorrow with patchy rain developing towards evening. Cloudy on Monday with further patchy falls. Showers becoming confined to the eastern ranges Tuesday with fine periods increasing further west. Mainly fine Wednesday but again a few showers to the ranges.

GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Mostly fine today. Tomorrow cloud increasing but remaining dry. Patchy rain likely Monday. On Tuesday rain about Gisborne and Hawkes Bay with cold southerlies, elsewhere a few showers. Wednesday sees showery weather becoming confined to areas north of Napier, further south fine breaks increasing.

WELLINGTON: Fine today. Cloud increasing tomorrow with a few showers developing from evening. Further showers Monday with southeasterlies. Tuesday sees showers becoming confined to the eastern hills then mainly fine on Wednesday.

NELSON and MARLBOROUGH: Fine today, athough some cloud about the east coast. Tomorrow cloud increasing with scattered rain about Nelson after dark and a few light showers about the Marlborough coast later with a southwest change. Patchy rain affecting most places Monday. On Tuesday clearing about Nelson and inland areas of Marlborough, elsewhere cloudy with light showers and southeasterlies. Mainly fine and frosty Wednesday but cloudy periods about the Kaikoura coast and Sounds.

BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Cloud increasing. Rain developing about Fiordland towards evening. Tomorrow rain working further north then gradually becoming fine from the south. Cloudy periods about Buller and northern Westland Monday, elsewhere fine and frosty. Mostly fine frosty weather everywhere Tuesday and Wednesday.

CANTERBURY: Fine apart from coastal cloudy periods today. A southwest change spreading north during tomorrow with brief showers. Cloudy Monday with coastal drizzle areas, chiefly morning and night. Remaining rather cloudy Tuesday about the coast with northeasterlies but further inland skies clearing and becoming frosty. Fine and frosty everywhere Wednesday.

OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: Cloud increasing later today with rain in the far west tonight. Rain spreading elsewhere early tomorrow then gradually clearing from the south. Fine and frosty inland Monday but cloudy about the coast. From Tuesday onwards cloudy westerly conditions persisting about the south coast and Stewart Island with light showers at times, elsewhere mostly fine.

CHATHAM ISLANDS: Showers becoming less frequent tomorrow with cold southwest conditions easing and tending westerly. Turning showery again during Monday with cold southwest winds returning. Continuing unsettled Tuesday and Wednesday.
