Vanuatu Meteorology Department Urges Public Not To Spread Rumours

The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-hazards Department (VMGD) is appealing to people in the country not to spread rumours about natural disasters.

In a statement on Thursday, the department said there were "several rumours circulating about earthquakes".

It said earthquakes cannot be predicted.

The VMGD said ongoing seismic activity in and around Vanuatu is considered normal, including occasional aftershocks following the 17 December 2024 earthquake.

"Some of these events may be felt, while others are too small to be noticed," it said.

"Do not spread rumours to confuse and cause panic to the public."
