World Vision responds to devastating floods

Mozambique floods

More than a week after Cyclone Idai hit Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe the scale of the devastation is only now becoming clear. Half a million people are homeless in Mozambique and tens of thousands more in Malawi and Zimbabwe. Life-saving aid is only just reaching the most remote areas. Cases of cholera are already being identified, and there are grave fears of starvation and malnutrition for those without access to aid.

World Vision has particular concerns for children – they are more susceptible to disease and many have been separated from their parents, which raises fears for their personal safety.

The situation is still getting worse for many of the millions of people affected.

Afghanistan floods

Afghanistan has been affected by a major drought for years now, and as so often happens when the land is hard and dry, sudden heavy rains last week have caused major flooding. Dozens of people have been killed and thousands of homes have been destroyed, in parts of the country already devastated by years of drought.

World Vision has been working in the worst hit areas for many years. We have staff on the ground available for interviews, including a New Zealander who is the head of operations in Afghanistan.

World Vision continues to also focus on the Ebola crisis in DR Congo, and the migrant crisis in Venezuela’s neighbouring countries. And six months on from the Indonesian tsunami we still have large teams on the ground helping communities rebuild. We also have staff available to talk about these issues.
